There's a 'Fifty-Fifty' Chance Godzilla Minus Zero Director Takashi Yamazaki Would Make a Godzilla Threequel
But what would he call it?

Godzilla Minus Zero writer/director Takashi Yamazaki told The Hollywood Reporter that he's "fifty-fifty" on whether or not he'd come back to make a third Godzilla film.
Extremely minor Godzilla Minus Zero spoilers ahead!
"I’m quite satisfied and happy with the current ending we have," Yakazaki said when asked about the film's ambiguous ending that leaves just enough room for a continuation of the story. "It entrusts the interpretation to the audience in terms of how they want to receive it and what they want to walk out of theaters with. That being said, if Godzilla Minus Zero is my last Godzilla film, that would make me a bit sad. I do have other films lined up, starting with Grandgear and a few others, but at some point in my career, I would love to revisit Godzilla and see how we can expand this world."
Grandgear was announced in 2024 as Yamazaki's first major Hollywood studio movie, with Sony Pictures, and his first English-language feature film. It's currently slated for a February 18, 2028 release. Starring Sam Nivola (The White Lotus Season 3), Nico Parker (The Last of Us, the live-action How to Train Your Dragon), and Paul Giamatti (it's Paul Giamatti...), Grandgear is a live-action sci-fi mecha movie, something Yamazaki also told THR was "something I’ve always wanted to do." Yamazaki is writing and directing, and Bad Robot is producing.
But first, Godzilla Minus Zero comes out in U.S. theaters this weekend, a mere three years after Godzilla Minus One became a box-office sensation in 2023 on a reportedly tiny $10–15 million budget and a lean 35-person VFX team, with Yamazaki overseeing. It went on to win the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, marking the first time a Japanese film took home the award, and did it with the tiniest budget of any category winner in more than a decade.
Yamazaki told IGN that, when writing Godzilla Minus Zero, he had to set aside the need to try and one-up everything he had accomplished with Godzilla Minus One. “I think it's very dangerous to create a movie with that type of mindset because you're going to risk diluting what makes the movie great in the first place," he said. "So those are the wrong reasons to make a movie and it ends up becoming an antagonist in your moviemaking process.”
Godzilla Minus Zero is both the first R-rated Godzilla movie and the first Japanese film to be specifically shot for IMAX screens. It's also very loud! We said it was Good in our review, calling out its "satisfying and visually amazing scenes of giant-monster destruction."
But back to the potential of a third Godzilla movie. Turning these films into a trilogy raises a critical question: What would it be called, after the naming convention has already counted down from Minus One to Minus Zero? I have a pitch: Godzilla Plus One that, of course, introduces another new kaiju. Toho, call me!
