This Company Is Paying One Lucky ‘GTA 6’ Fan Nearly $900 to Play the Game for 8 Hours
Is it a gamer’s dream job of the year?
Ahead of the release “Grand Theft Auto 6” in November, TV and broadband provider Virgin Media has launched a new sweepstakes: It’s going to pay one winning candidate almost $900 to play the hotly anticipated adventure-action title for eight hours and share their “honest” review of the game on social media. The winner also will get a free copy of “GTA 6.”
Virgin Media is accepting applications through Nov. 15 for the gig, requiring applicants to explain why they deserve to get the job. The winner will be paid €100 (approximately $111) per hour to play the game for eight hours, which can be nonconsecutive. The company is encouraging job hopefuls to “explore the sun-soaked state of Leonida, cruise the neon-lit streets of Vice City, and answer the question on everyone’s mind. Does ‘GTA 6’ live up to the hype?”
The catch? The promotion is being sponsored by Virgin Media Ireland, and the offer is open only to residents of the Republic of Ireland. The company is hoping to get a publicity boost from the stunt: The winner will be required to share their “GTA 6” review on Instagram or TikTok and tag Virgin Media Ireland.
“‘GTA 6’ is the biggest game launch in years, maybe ever,” a Virgin Media spokesperson said. “It’s the kind of launch that friends plan their whole week around, and we wanted to be part of that excitement.” Virgin Media is a division of Liberty Global, John Malone’s international telecommunications and investment company.
Other efforts to piggyback on “GTA 6” hype: An infantry division of the U.S. Army has offered active-duty soldiers a four-day pass to play the game if they reenlist for a minimum of two years.
Take-Two Interactive’s Rockstar Games will release “GTA 6,” set in the Florida-like fictional world of Leonida, for Sony’s PS5 and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X and S on Nov. 19. The game’s first trailer has racked up more than 300 million views on YouTube, and Rockstar’s extended look at the game drew more than 31 million views on Netflix from Aug. 27-31.
