‘& Juliet’ to Close on Broadway After Four Years

“& Juliet,” a revisionist jukebox musical about Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers, is closing after four years on Broadway.

The upbeat take on “Romeo & Juliet,” which uses Swedish music producer Max Martin’s chart-topping hits to imagine what would happen if Juliet didn’t stab herself with Romeo’s dagger and join in him death, has set its final performance for Jan. 3, 2027. By then, the show will have played 1,723 regular performances and 20 preview performances, putting it among the 50 longest-running Broadway musicals of all time. Luke Sheppard, who is returning to the Great White Way with “Paddington,” directed “& Juliet” while “Schitt’s Creek” alum David West Read wrote the musical’s book.

“& Juliet” opened on Broadway in 2022 after an unsuccessful stint on London’s West End, where the musical’s run was cut short by COVID and had to close without turning a profit. In New York, “& Juliet” broke multiple box office records at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre and became one of the rare post-pandemic musicals to recoup its investment. And the show has translated beyond Broadway with productions in 34 states and nine countries including Germany, Canada and Singapore. The tour has also become profitable, recouping in 2025.

Although “& Juliet” didn’t win any Tony Awards, the musical remained a hot ticket through fun casting choices like TikTok star Charli D’Amelio, ‘N Sync’s Joey Fatone, “Real Housewives” alum Kandi Burruss and Chrissy Metz, as well as special guests like Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson. Fatone’s involvement was particularly fitting because “& Juliet” features ‘N Sync songs like “It’s Gonna Be Me.” Martin’s pop anthems, such as, Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone,” Britney Spears’ “I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman” and “Overprotected,” Katy Perry’s “Roar” and Demi Lovato’s “Confident” also help to score Juliet’s new lease on life and love.

“& Juliet” ends on a celebratory note, and producers estimate that 8,447 pounds (more than four tons) of confetti have been sprinkled into the audience of the Stephen Sondheim Theatre.
