Jennifer Lawrence Says ‘Absolutely F—ing Not’ to Transforming Into X-Men’s Mystique Again
Jennifer Lawrence played the “X-Men” character Mystique four times on the big screen between 2011 and 2019, and it appears she has no interest whatsoever in slipping back into the mutant’s iconic blue skin. In fact, the Oscar winner’s days of undergoing any extreme makeup and/or prosthetics-driven character transformation are likely over.
“My favorite part of playing Mystique was the stunts,” Lawrence said in a video interview with Allure magazine. “It was so fun to train in that way and learn how to move. I had the same stunt double, Renee Moneymaker, who was Katniss. She is one of my best friends, so that was great. My least favorite part was most certainly the paint.”
When Allure then asked if she would consider doing heavy prosthetic work like Mystique again, Lawrence shot back: “Never say never, but absolutely fucking not. You know how air brushing is very cold? And I am ticklish. I learned how little sleep I can operate on and what can happen to the human mind when you’ve actually reached your breaking point. And patience!”
In a separate interview on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, Lawrence recalled the difficulty of having to sit in a makeup chair for eight hours during the making of “X-Men: First Class,” which marked her debut as Mystique.
“For ‘First Class,’ it was all body paint and glue. It was eight hours every time and ticklish,” she said. “You’ve had air brushing, right? Imagine two tiny, cold, compressing air brushes all over your body. I am a hero. No one will understand what I went through.”
Lawrence added that even just for her Mystique screen test before she landed the role she had to dye her hair several different colors in one day, from red to brown, black and blonde. The dye ended up permanently damaging her hair.
