GTA 6’s Jason And Lucia’s Relationship Is Deeper Than You Think

Grand Theft Auto 6's Jason and Lucia may not have to be in a romantic relationship. Throughout the GTA 6 extended look, we noticed several things that hint toward a far deeper relationship system than we first expected.

When changing characters, there's a heart symbol in the bottom corner between the two. This represents that Jason and Lucia are, in fact, in a romantic relationship, but there's a lot of nuance to the system. This relationship is entirely optional--you do not need to be romantically involved. However, it's impossible to separate the two in terms of the storyline. As you progress through the game, the two will continue to be important parts of one another's lives.

Whether or not you want to pursue a romantic relationship is up to you. The way Rockstar has been describing it is a lot more "dynamic." It's not as rigid as other games. Normally, when a game has a relationship mechanic, it feels very binary. Occasionally, characters will be created solely to serve as potential romantic partners. Throw a few gifts their way, have some good conversations, and consider yourself partnered off. By and large, the story remains the same.

Jason and Lucia's relationship is more like a spectrum, and it can be strengthened via various activities. While it wasn't present in GTA 5, going on dates with people was present in other GTA titles. It doesn't seem like there are set missions for going on dates in GTA 6. Instead, moments that occur while you're on dates or completing activities could strengthen your relationship--holding hands or sharing a meal, for example.

The relationship is not tracked by a bar or meter, but it has different states. The two most obvious ones are that you're either in a relationship or not, but there may be other states in between. As you engage with different activities, it will move up to different relationship states.

While pursuing a romantic relationship is optional, there are no gameplay penalties if you choose not to. If you're worried that you have to be in a relationship to benefit from stat perks, that doesn't appear to be a factor. There could be other benefits that we're unaware of, but they're more likely to be related to dialogue or different scenes.

It's also important to note that Jason and Lucia can't break up in the traditional sense. Generally, if you choose not to date, you can't split up entirely and lead different lives. However, if you had decided to pursue a romantic relationship and then change your mind, there are ways to get out of that relationship. However, you will always be partners in crime, and your shared story will continue.

If you end up pursuing a relationship, it doesn't require a lot of maintenance. If things come up and you don't want to spend time with the other person, it won't hinder their relationship. You'll have to actively decide not to be in a romantic relationship.

This makes GTA 6 almost unique in terms of how romantic relationships play out. You'll have to actively decide which type of relationship you'd like to pursue, and there's no "preferred" experience in terms of the story. Each character has agency in the relationship, but it remains to be seen how you're supposed to control both characters when they're talking to one another.
