Bradley Cooper and Danny McBride’s ‘G.I. Joe’ Movie Set for 2028; Paramount Shifts New ‘Paranormal Activity’ to Halloween 2027
Danny McBride‘s “G.I. Joe” movie, starring Bradley Cooper, will march into movie theaters in 2028.
Paramount announced on Friday that the film will get a wide theatrical release on Oct. 20, 2028. McBride will direct the reimagining of the “G.I. Joe” franchise — which kicked off with the Hasbro toy line and spawned comic book series, animated series and a trio of live-action films — from a screenplay he wrote with Jeff Fradley and John Carcieri. Cooper is set to star as Duke, one of the franchise’s most iconic characters, but the studio is keeping further plot details under wraps. The film is produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Mark Vahradian, and Zev Foreman for Hasbro Entertainment.
Paramount and (the newly-renamed) Blumhouse Atomic also revealed that the next “Paranormal Activity” movie will debut in the Halloween corridor (on Oct. 22, 2027), instead of launching in the summer. The film, directed by Ian Tuason, was previously dated for May 21.
Created by Oren Peli, the original “Paranormal Activity” grossed nearly $194 million worldwide and became one of the most profitable films in cinema history. The found-footage franchise has since grown to seven installments and grossed more than $900 million globally.
The new movie stars Chase Yi, Sonia Mena and Maya Da Costa. Peli returns to produce for Solana Films, with James Wan and Jason Blum producing for Blumhouse Atomic. Michael Clear and Judson Scott will executive produce for Blumhouse Atomic, with Alayna Glasthal overseeing the project for the company. Executive producers are Steven Schneider (for Room 101, Inc.), Dan Slater and Cody Calahan.
The dating announcements come as Skydance, led by David Ellison, focuses on maximizing its massive IP library after the major consolidation united Paramount and Warner Bros. One example: the mega-studio recently announced there’s a new “Transformers” project in the works, with Steven Spielberg attached to steer the franchise as a producer. Paramount was already developing “Top Gun,” “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” “Sonic the Hedgehog” and “Star Trek” sequels, while Warner Bros. is set to deliver an “Ocean’s 11″ prequel (directed by Cooper who co-stars with producer Margot Robbie), more “Lord of the Rings” movies and the “Weapons” sequel “Gladys,” as the combined studio commits to release 30 movies a year.
