I’m a huge fan of samurai games. The swift action of a fast, brutal blade, combined with beautiful takes on Japan to explore, makes them some of my favorites in my collection. I even have a Ghost of Tsushima tattoo, as Jin’s story left such a mark on me. With its sequel, Ghost of Yotei, seemingly skipping PC players, now’s your chance to give one of my other recommendations a try, especially with Rise of the Ronin at a massive 55% discount right now, making it cheaper than ever.

You play as the titular ronin, a custom character who–in the opening act of the game–loses their Blade Twin after a failed attempt to assassinate Commodore Matthew Perry. You’re left as a masterless samurai wandering through a Japan split between pro- and anti-shogunate factions. The arrival of the “Black Ships” from America only complicates things further, and you, my little samurai, have been placed right in the middle of it all. No pressure.

In familiar Team Ninja fashion–the developer behind the Nioh games as well as Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty–combat takes the spotlight, with energetic swordplay and a whole variety of weapons to master. Alongside a story that responds to your choices, it’s an interesting experience that feels like a typical Team Ninja game, but in an open-world setting.

I’m doing a little bit of an injustice by comparing Sucker Punch’s Ghost series with Rise of the Ronin. There’s clearly some DNA shared between the two, but Rise of the Ronin feels grander in scale–not necessarily better, but Team Ninja knows what its players like. While Ghost of Yotei’s combat is more cinematic, Rise of the Ronin’s is far more bombastic and varied, making it a great fit if you’re looking for an action RPG with plenty of depth.
