‘Widow’s Bay’ Wins Most Emmys Ever for a Comedy Series in a Year, Breaking ‘The Studio’s’ Record
“Widow’s Bay” is the most awarded comedy season in Emmy history.
Apple TV‘s horror-comedy closed the weekend with 14 Emmys — eight banked at the Creative Arts ceremonies and six more on Monday’s telecast — surpassing the 13 that “The Studio” won a year ago for the most Emmys ever collected by a comedy series in a single year.
The haul, from its impressive 19 nominations, was anchored by the top prize itself: “Widow’s Bay” won outstanding comedy series over “Abbott Elementary,” “The Bear,” “Hacks,” “Margo’s Got Money Troubles,” “Nobody Wants This,” “Only Murders in the Building” and “Shrinking” — a field that included the record-nominated “Hacks.”
Apple’s ensemble converted almost everything it touched. Matthew Rhys took lead comedy actor, along with Kate O’Flynn in supporting actress, Stephen Root in supporting actor, directing for Hiro Murai — a first for an Asian director — and writing for Katie Dippold’s premiere episode. In addition, the show won at the Creative Arts for Betty Gilpin’s guest comedy actress, production design, casting, cinematography, music composition, music supervision, sound editing and sound mixing.
