‘The Odyssey’ Returns to Imax 70mm Theaters Again After Record-Breaking Run
Couldn’t make the cross-country journey to catch “The Odyssey” in Imax 70mm last summer? Luckily, you’ll have another chance. Universal, starting Dec. 11, is re-releasing Christopher Nolan‘s epic on more than 1,000 screens in the U.S. and Canada in all formats, including Imax and the coveted Imax 70mm.
Released on July 17, “The Odyssey,” despite being a three-hour, adult-oriented historical drama, grossed $626 million domestically and $1.8 billion worldwide, becoming Universal’s and Nolan’s highest-grossing film ever. It was the second-highest-grossing film of 2026, behind “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.”
“The Odyssey” was also the first movie shot entirely in Imax, and broke two box office records for the company: highest-grossing Imax film of all time ($550 million worldwide in the three-month period) and biggest domestic opening in Imax 70mm.
This isn’t the first time Universal put “The Odyssey” back in theaters. The film had a limited Imax and Imax 70mm run in early October.
Based on the ancient Greek poem, “The Odyssey” tells the story of Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, who makes the arduous journey home to reclaim his throne after emerging victorious in the ten-year-long Trojan War. Matt Damon leads the cast as Odysseus, starring alongside Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, John Leguizamo, Elliot Page, Jon Bernthal and more.
“The Odyssey” is sure to be a major contender come Oscar season. Variety‘s awards editor Clayton Davis has the film earning nominations in nearly every major category and taking home wins for best picture, supporting actress, casting, cinematography, editing, sound and original score.
