‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Overtakes ‘Star Wars: Force Awakens’ as Highest-Grossing Movie of All Time at Domestic Box Office
All hail Peter Parker. “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has notched a heroic box office milestone, overtaking 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” as the highest-grossing domestic release of all time.
“The Force Awakens” had spent more than a decade as the biggest movie ever at the North American box office with $936 million. It has officially ceded the crown to Tom Holland’s latest Spidey adventure, which has surpassed that benchmark with $936.773 million in 47 days.
Now the question is whether “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has the endurance to become the first movie in history to generate $1 billion at the domestic box office — although that might be unlikely at this point without a re-release.

After seven weekends in theaters, Sony and Marvel’s epic “Brand New Day” has earned a jaw-dropping $2.4 billion at the global box office. It’s the third-highest grossing movie of all time, trailing just 2009’s “Avatar” ($2.9 billion), “Avengers: Endgame” ($2.7 billion) and ahead of 2022’s “Avatar: The Way of Water” ($2.3 billion) and 1994’s “Titanic” ($2.2 billion).
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” Holland’s fourth solo outing as Peter Parker, has been on an epic box office run since late July. The movie launched to a record-breaking $360 million in North America and a staggering $932 million globally in its opening weekend; it then cleared $1 billion after just six days of release. It reached $2 billion after three weekends, becoming the second-fastest film to reach the threshold following 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame,” which got there after 11 days.
Directed by “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton, “Brand New Day” picks up after the events of 2021’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home” — which ended with the entire world forgetting about Peter Parker. Initial demand was stratospheric because audiences were desperate to find out the ramifications of Spider-Man’s fateful choice. (And they wanted to be among the first to find out who Sadie Sink was playing in the movie. Spoiler alert: It’s Jean Grey.) Yet the movie enjoyed unprecedented staying power because of the euphoric word of mouth.
“Brand New Day” marks a needed win for Marvel, which endured a rough 2025 at the box office with commercial misses like “Captain America: Brave New World” and “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.” The comic book empire will build on the success of “Spider-Man 4” with “Avengers: Doomsday,” which reunites just about every superhero you can think of (and reintroduces Robert Downey Jr. not as Iron Man but as the villain Doctor Doom) in December.
