‘Point Break’ TV Series Greenlit at AMC, Canal+

The “Point Break” followup series has officially been ordered at AMC and AMC+, Variety has learned.

The modern update of the beloved 1991 action film was first reported to be in the works at the network back in December 2025. As reported at the time, the show hails from lead studio Alcon Television Group as well as AMC Studios and StudioCanal, who will co-produce. StudioCanal, a Canal+ company, will handle international sales and worldwide distribution outside the U.S. and Canada.

The first season of the series will consist of eight episodes. Production is slated to begin in early 2027.

The logline for the series states, “More than three decades after the events of the original ‘Point Break’ film, a new heist crew inspired by the Ex-Presidents has emerged and the FBI must rely on a mysterious ex-pro surfer with a checkered past to infiltrate them.”

Dave Kalstein and Christopher C. Rogers serve as co-showrunners and executive producers on the series. Alcon co-founders and co-CEOs Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson executive produce, as do Alcon Television Group head Ben Roberts and Julia Cohen. M-K Kennedy, Paul Gilbert and Daniel Gratton are overseeing the project for StudioCanal. Steven Johnson, Diego Piasek, and Gene Hong will serve as co-executive producers, with Emily Yoshida and Ben Cook as supervising producers.

“Start with one of the most entertaining and unforgettable action films ever made, add a powerhouse creative team and producing partners, massive fan interest that has been clear from the moment we announced the series was in development and you get a greenlight we could not be more excited about,” said Dan McDermott, chief content officer of AMC Global Media and president of AMC Studios. “Dave Kalstein and Chris Rogers have created a story and characters that honor the legacy of the film and will bring a new generation of Ex-Presidents to the world.”

The original “Point Break” starred Keanu Reeves as rookie FBI agent Johnny Utah and Patrick Swayze as Bohdi, surf king and leader of the Ex-Presidents. Lori Petty and Gary Busey also starred. The film has become a cult classic in the years since its release.

“’Point Break’ was the movie that rocked our worlds forever,” Kalstein and Rogers said in a joint statement. “It was this wild cinematic sermon on friendship, outlaws, and spirituality that struck our souls. As we got older, we realized it hit millions of people the same way. ‘Point Break’ is more than just a movie—it’s a way of looking at the world. We are so honored to be carrying this legacy forward with Alcon, AMC, and StudioCanal. We’re putting together a series that will inspire audiences everywhere to seek The Ultimate.”

This will not be the first attempt to bring “Point Break” into the 21st century. A remake of the film starring Luke Bracey as Johnny and Édgar Ramírez as Bohdi was released in 2015. It performed moderately well at the box office but was roundly rejected by critics upon its debut.

This marks the latest new series order at AMC recently. The network is also currently at work on the NASCAR series “Thunder Road” starring Dennis Quaid. AMC is also preparing to launch the final season of “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon,” which will debut in 2027, and recently aired the Silicon Valley drama “The Audacity.”
