New Clayface Trailer Resists the Urge to Reveal His Final Form, Which Is Exactly How It Should Be

DC Studios has released the final Clayface trailer, which does not, thankfully, reveal his final form.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly in the summer, Clayface actor Tom Rhys Harries teased what fans can expect to see of his character’s final form when they watch the R-rated body horror movie.

“It’s been a year since I saw that thing being built out. I can’t wait for people to see it,” he says. “I’m constantly in awe of the huge creative machinery that goes into making a film like this, and how talented everybody on board is, and how lucky I felt to be a part of that in any way.”

Then, speaking to Empire magazine this week, Rhys Harries teased Clayface’s final form further, saying: “It’s f***ing sick!”

While Clayface trailers have shown how Matt Hagen becomes Clayface, with his face melting and, in one particularly disturbing shot, his eyelids fusing together, DC Studios have resisted the urge to show the Gotham bad guy in all his glory. Fans of the character from the comics and animated shows probably have an idea of what to expect here, but seeing Clayface in live-action will surely be a thrill for all.

Fans are completely on board with DC Studios holding Clayface’s final form back, as am I. The last thing you want is for the movie’s big reveal to be spoiled before the movie itself even comes out. I suspect we’ll see the final form at the end of the film as part of a setup for the character’s introduction into the wider DC Universe. Where Clayface will then appear in live-action is unknown, but you’d like to think James Gunn has a plan for the character, given he’s got his own movie.

The DCU is currently trundling forward, with the final two episodes of Lanterns out soon. We then have Clayface hitting theaters on October 23. Man of Tomorrow, Gunn’s Superman follow-up, comes out next summer. Upcoming HBO show The People v. Gorilla Grodd, which is filming now, follows.

Beyond that, we have no other confirmed DCU projects in active production, let alone with release windows. But we know there are plans for Batman, Swamp Thing, and Wonder Woman movies eventually.

As for this new Clayface trailer, there's a shot of Hagen suffocating someone inside his stomach, and you can see the head of his hapless victom protruding from his lower back (that's a bad way to go). But we also get Clayface's final form teased, briefly, at the end of the trailer via the shadow of what looks like his growing arm, his bulbous hand, and the slow rise of the monster himself.
