‘Lanterns’ Episode 3 Attracts 10 Million Viewers Globally on HBO Max, a New Series High

HBO Max‘s “Lanterns” continues to grow in viewership. The DC Studios series’ third episode, which premiered Sunday, Aug. 30, averaged 10 million viewers globally and 7 million viewers in the U.S. after three days of viewership, according to the network/streamer.

That marks a series high for “Lanterns,” which continues to grow week-to-week since its series premiere on August 16. Also, per HBO Max, the show’s pilot episode has now attracted more than 20 million viewers worldwide.

HBO Max also reports that “Lanterns” is now among the top five series launches in the platform’s history. It also remains the biggest premiere for a DC Studios show on HBO Max.

Episode 3 of “Lanterns” dove into the backstory of John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and how long he has been preparing and training — at the direction of his parents — to one day take over the role of the Green Lantern from Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler). In the episode, John is grilled by one of the Guardians (Laura Linney) to see whether he’s worthy of replacing Hal.

Through flashbacks, we see how his father, John Stewart, Sr. (J. Alphonse Nicholson), and mother Bernadette (Jasmine Cephas Jones) train him to show no fear.

Based on DC’s “Green Lantern” comic books, “Lanterns” stars Pierre, Chandler, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Jason Ritter and Ulrich Thomsen.

Per the official logline, the show follows “new recruit John Stewart (Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”

“Lanterns” is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King. All three serve as executive producers along with James Hawes, with Hawes also directing the first two episodes. James Gunn, Peter Safran and Ron Schmidt also executive produce. Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel and Alik Sakharov will direct on the series. HBO produces in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios.
