Korea Box Office: ‘The Odyssey’ Eclipses ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’

“The Odyssey” held onto the top spot at the South Korean box office during the weekend of Aug. 28–30.

According to data from KOBIS, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council, the Christopher Nolan-directed tentpole generated $8.7 million from 1,058,642 admissions over the three-day frame across 2,071 screens, capturing 64.7% of total weekend business. Continuing its powerhouse late-summer theatrical run in its fourth weekend of release, the film lifted its cumulative South Korean gross to $71.7 million from 8,864,947 total admissions since its Aug. 5 launch.

Superhero blockbuster “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” remained in second place during its fifth weekend, pulling in $1.9 million from 250,442 admissions over the frame. The film accounted for 14.4% of the weekend market, pushing its cumulative local haul to $65 million from 8,548,400 admissions.

Local family road-trip drama “The Journey to Gyeongju” debuted in third place, generating $912,660 from 124,963 admissions across 801 screens. Directed by Kim Mi-jo, the narrative follows a grieving mother and her three daughters who embark on a journey to Gyeongju to confront the released perpetrator responsible for the death of their youngest family member. Starring Lee Jung-eun, Gong Hyo-jin, Park So-dam, Lee Yeon, and Byun Yo-han, the film has collected $1.3 million from 192,384 total admissions since its Aug. 26 rollout.

“The End of Oak Street” opened in fourth place, pulling in $476,938 from 63,472 admissions over the weekend. Since its Aug. 26 arrival, the title has brought $783,473 from 107,438 admissions.

Local animated film “Teenieping: Legend of the Whale Heartstone” finished in fifth place, adding $283,019 from 39,740 admissions. Directed by Kim Soo-hoon, the musical fantasy adventure follows Princess Romi, Heartsping, and their companions exploring an undersea kingdom to rescue Queen Velita. The family film has reached $5.7 million from 838,709 viewers since its Aug. 5 launch.

“Insidious: Out of the Further” took sixth place in its sophomore outing, bringing in $169,467 from 22,129 admissions. The horror entry has lifted its overall South Korean total past the million-dollar mark to $1.1 million from 148,333 viewers.

“Detective Conan the Movie: Fallen Angel of the Highway” landed in seventh place, collecting $154,613 from 20,686 admissions. Directed by Takahiro Hasui, the franchise installment has earned $2.9 million from 403,090 admissions.

The local action-comedy sequel “Ok! Madam: Bon Voyage” took eighth place, generating $80,132 from 10,969 admissions. Directed by Lee Cheol-ha and starring Uhm Jung-hwa, Park Sung-woong, Lee Sang-yun, and Sooyoung, the comedy has moved its cume to $2.2 million from 334,907 ticket buyers.

“Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie” placed ninth, taking $60,367 from 8,636 admissions over the frame to push its cume to $749,164 from 106,540 viewers.

Rounding out the top 10 was the local animated fantasy “Ghost Band,” which opened to $42,077 from 7,961 admissions. Directed by Geum Dong-ho, the musical animation follows a singer-songwriter with the supernatural ability to see spirits who joins forces with a quartet of ghosts to form a musical troupe. Since its Aug. 26 rollout, the indie animation has grossed $71,175 from 13,803 total admissions.

The overall market collective gross for the weekend was $13.5 million, down from last week’s $16.1 million.
