Fueled by ‘La Bola Negra,’ Spain’s Indie Distribution Make Robust Gains, to Be Highlighted at Valladolid’s Merci Market
The box office success of “La Bola Negra,” handled by Elastica Films, has given Spain’s independent film distribution sector a timely boost. The momentum comes as Valladolid’s Merci market enters its sixth edition, its first since the death of José Luis Cienfuegos, the director of Valladolid, known in Spain as the Seminci, who helped build the event.
Running Oct. 28-30 at Valladolid’s Broadway cinemas, Merci loos set to draw more than 200 industry professionals. Its 26-film slate gives exhibitors an advance look at releases scheduled for late 2026 and the first half of 2027.
Organized by Valladolid and Adicine, whose 20 member companies account for the vast majority of Spain’s independent film distribution sector, Merci brings distributors and exhibitors together to discuss release strategies, present marketing campaigns and forge business ties.

At last October’s Merci, Comscore reported that Adicine members had captured a 12% share of Spain’s theatrical box office through September 2025. Following the runaway success of “La Bola Negra” — now Spain’s fourth highest-grossing domestic film ever, with more than €29.9 million ($33.5 million) and counting — that share could reach 16%-20% by year-end, estimates Adicine co-president Enrique Costa, Elastica Films co-founder.
“‘La Bola Negra’ shows that independent distributors can handle major Spanish films with mainstream appeal and deliver exceptional results,” Costa says.
Other recent successes range from Spanish films “Sundays” and “Sirât,” both distributed by BTeam Pictures, to international titles “Sentimental Value” and “Backrooms,” handled by Elastica.
Winning Over Exhibitors
Merci 2026’s lineup features Gerardo Herrero’s buzzy war thriller “Carta Blanca,” from Karma Films; Javier Ruiz Caldera’s San Sebastián Fest comedy hit “5 More Minutes,” which has just closed a major sale handled in and ouside Spain by Filmax; and Florian Zeller’s “Bunker,” starring Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem, co-produced by MOD Producciones and distributed locally by Elastica.
Among the international highlights are Cristian Mungiu’s Cannes Palme d’Or winner “Fjord,” from Caramel Films and Filmin, and Beth de Araújo’s Sundance prizewinner “Josephine,” starring Channing Tatum and Gemma Chan, handled by A Contracorriente Films.
Beyond showcasing their upcoming releases, distributors want to persuade exhibitors to give independent films the support they need in theaters. Costa urges cinema operators to “program, nurture and protect” those films. “It’s about finding allies,” he says.
Successful releases are already helping build confidence between the two sides of the business.
“Exhibitors know which distributors have delivered successful releases, and that gives them confidence in what those companies bring next,” says Adicine co-president Lara Pérez-Camiña.
Merci also serves as “a barometer,” Pérez-Camiña says, allowing distributors to gauge exhibitors’ reactions to upcoming releases.
The association’s companies handle everything from Spanish auteur films with crossover ambitions to international arthouse releases and commercially oriented genre fare.
For smaller distributors, Merci effectively doubles as an exhibitor convention they could scarcely afford to organize on their own.
“There are many films that, without Merci, might have found it harder to secure support from cinemas or television buyers,” Pérez-Camiña says.
Movistar Plus, Filmin and HBO are among the streaming platforms Pérez-Camiña identifies as regular Merci participants and key buyers of independent films.
A Market in Transition
The sixth edition is also Merci’s first without Cienfuegos, who played a central role in shaping the market. The festival’s new leadership, Javier H. Estrada and Mariona Viader, has maintained its collaboration with Adicine.
“We’ve felt very supported by the festival’s new management from the outset,” Costa says. He points to this year’s increased participation as evidence of continuing industry interest.
Merci will honor Golem distribution and exhibition veteran Otilio García with the newly named José Luis Cienfuegos Award for professional achievement, to be presented Oct. 29.
Beyond the Screening Room
The professional program will explore new ways to attract moviegoers through the panel “Cinemas, Distributors and Platforms: Together for Audiences.”
The discussion will offer an opportunity to address theatrical windows. Independent distributors, Costa argues, “continue to maintain longer windows” than other distributors, something he believes exhibitors should take into account.
Mark de Quervain of Eventive will lead a presentation titled “License to Discover: AI, Agentic Search and Cinema’s Next Audience,” in collaboration with Europa Cinemas. Another session, “Towards Accessible Cinema With Greta App,” will examine accessibility for moviegoers.
Rentrak Spain will present box office trends and fresh findings from Cinequest, an audience research tool launched by Comscore in 2025.
Running alongside Merci on Oct. 29-30, Seminci’s La Meseta Distribution Lab will showcase seven independent feature film release campaigns developed with industry mentors. The campaigns will compete for awards totaling $10,500, to be presented at Merci’s Oct. 30 closing ceremony.
