By Skipping Last-Gen Systems, Stranger Than Heaven is Allowing RGG Studio to Fully Leverage the Power of Current-Gen Consoles at Long Last
Stranger Than Heaven will apparently be the most technically accomplished game that developer RGG Studio has ever produced, and that’s largely due to the fact that it's being created solely for current generation hardware. The game’s producer, Hiroyuki Sakamoto, confirmed as much to IGN during an interview conducted at Gamescom Asia x Thailand Game Show 2026 this week.
“We set out to make Stranger Than Heaven as a completely brand-new game, with the goal of creating something entirely fresh while putting forth the absolute best quality we can produce right now,” explained Sakamoto. “[So] we decided to drop previous-gen platforms like the PS4 and focus on creating an experience best enjoyed natively on current-gen consoles like the PS5.”
Since the launch of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S systems back in 2020, all of RGG Studio’s games have still kept one foot stuck in the previous console generation. 2024’s Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth was developed to run across two eras of PlayStation and Xbox, and while Xbox One was finally dropped for Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties earlier this year, support for PlayStation 4 remained.
However, by developing Stranger Than Heaven purely for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, the team hasn’t had to make any hardware-based compromises to its vision for the new game’s multiple decade-spanning journey through early 20th century Japan.
“In the past, hardware constraints meant limiting the number of characters we could display on screen at once, among other things we had to give up on,” continued Sakamoto. “With Stranger Than Heaven, by fully leveraging the PS5's capabilities we were able to showcase more characters on screen simultaneously than ever before and raise character quality to the next level.”
Despite some lingering reservations regarding its digital resurrection of the late rapper Tupac Shakur, IGN's Michael Higham found a lot to like about Stranger Than Heaven in his recent hands-on preview. With just over two months to go before its scheduled release in January, Sakamato seems supremely confident in where the game is at, going on to state, “I think we succeeded in achieving our goal of creating a richer visual experience with a stronger artistic identity than anything we've done prior.”
During the same chat, Sakamoto also confirmed the inclusion of in-game “cheats” in Stranger Than Heaven that you can read about here.
Stranger Than Heaven is set for release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC on January 15, 2027.
